Hurricane Igor lost its hurricane status late Tuesday, slipping into a post-tropical status as it sped by Newfoundland's southeastern tip, forecasters said.
But the Canadian province's coast was still experiencing hurricane force winds of 80 mph (130 kph), the National Hurricane Center said in its final advisory for the storm.
A gust of 90 mph (144 kph) was reported at Bonavista, Newfoundland, along with a sustained wind of 73 mph, according to the Miami, Florida-based National Hurricane Center.
A hurricane watch remained in effect for the Newfoundland coast from Stones Cove to Fogo Island, and a tropical storm warning was in effect from Burgeo to Triton and the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. But forecasters said they expected the watches and warnings to be discontinued later Tuesday night.
